On July 30, 2026, a minimum of nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A surge of people stormed the border. Spanish troops were called in after government officials could not manage the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities stated that about 40,000 migrants entered on foot, about half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union announced Frontex would assist and urged Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces kept the flow under control and worked to halt additional loss of life.
